They teach simple techniques that enable you to defend against an attacker who is bigger and stronger. The class is super fun and the techniques are really good (I practiced the choking defense with my bf who is 6'5 and over 250lbs and it worked!) I can't say enough good things about this place and the staff is great. Also the first 3 classes were free so I was able to try it out before making any commitment. If you are thinking about it just go. You'll love it.

While he didn't have any bullying issues, the life skills and fundamentals that are also taught with the class have been great! They also incorporate fun activities that keep the young ones engaged. So much so it lead me to join (with some encouragement from my son) I have no prior martial arts background and I'm not getting any younger. However with how the classes are structured I quickly found that to became a moot point. 3 months in and we are both enjoying our classes and even a little competitive fun at home. Just try it.

format_quote 5 / 5 Stars Are you or your children of a small stature that are getting beat up, picked on, or bullied a lot? Then Jiu-jitsu is a perfect thing to look into! Pretty much the only sport where I've seen a woman that weighs maybe 120 pounds this a full grown man close to 240 pounds and "have her way" with him. Whether that be an arm bar or what have you for the situation. It seems to be the great equalizer. I take my son here for the Bullyproof Program that they offer. It is an awesome friendly environment that lets the kids train easily and safely. The kid's instructors they would work with on training nights, at the time of this review (Gary and Jack), are great knowledgeable and friendly people. They are fantastic with the kids and don't have any problems getting them to pay attention. The program has helped boost my son's confidence and self esteem immensely. He was having issues the last few years being bullied at school and on the bus. Which led to him being really reserved and quiet. But the programs techniques on how to handle bullies let him open up a lot. That and more friends helps. And he hasn't said anything about being bullied at all this year either. Yay! We just had to tell him he won't get in trouble for defending himself or someone else getting beat up and to follow his rules of engagement. No matter what the school did he would be solid and fist bumped at home. They also have awesome Adult Combatives and Women Empowered Programs. I haven't personally done the one or had my wife do the other. But, if they're anything like the Bullyproof programs I have no problem recommending them and saying heck, check this out if you don't have any kids! Or even if you do have kids and want to get in on the action yourself! I will be at some point here in the future. Kent, Gary, and Grant are the only instructors I've met and they're all awesome people. So check em out!

Will my child become a bully?

Through our work, we have seen that confident kids make kinder kids. We teach children how to not only stand up to bullies for themselves, but how to stand up for others. Our Rules of Engagement teach children to avoid the fight if at all possible by first using their words, and then telling an adult.

When they do need to resort to physical self-defense, we do not teach children punches or kicks in the Gracie Bullyproof program, but rather, empowered by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, to neutralize, defend, control, and negotiate if possible.

Are parents allowed to watch?

We encourage parents to watch their children in their kids martial arts lessons. We love parents getting involved! Even better… you can join in our martial arts classes for adults, and have yet another thing in common with your little one. We love seeing the bond of families who train together!

Do I need to be fit or athletic for this?

There are zero fitness requirements to be able to start our beginner Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes! One of the benefits of BJJ is that it relies on technique and timing rather than strength, speed, or athleticism.

Our students start at all different fitness levels, however, you will find that you do enhance your fitness by doing our BJJ classes. Isn’t that the point though? A fun workout that gets results!

Karate classes vs. BJJ classes. Which is best?

Many parents ask, what’s the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Karate classes? While we believe all martial-arts have value, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has not only been proven to be the most effective martial art for a smaller person to defend themselves in a real fight for nearly a century, it also can be the most gentle.

We don’t want our kids or students turning into bullies themselves, and we also believe self-defense should be scalable, depending on the situation. Whereas kids Karate lessons or Taekwondo classes rely solely on landing punches and kicks, jiu-jitsu for kids focuses on neutralizing a threat with verbal boundaries, distance management, body control, and eventual negotiation.

What do I need to bring to my first martial arts lesson?

Upon arriving for your first jiu-jitsu class, we will provide a uniform, called a gi, for you to wear. We recommend wearing comfortable undergarments or leggings, and a t-shirt or rashguard that you can wear under your gi. We will also have training attire available for purchase after your class.
